Sinai is a different desert

While the Hurghada desert is classic open sand dunes, Sharm El Sheikh sits on the Sinai peninsula, which means rockier terrain, deeper canyons, and fewer operators running tours in it. The altitude is slightly higher, the air is drier, and the drop in ambient light pollution once you leave the hotel strip is immediate and dramatic.

Why travelers pick Sharm over Hurghada

Usually for one of three reasons. First, they have already done Hurghada and want something quieter. Second, they are in Sharm and want a half-day desert option, not a full Super Safari. Third, and most common lately, they want the stargazing. Sharm night sky is genuinely exceptional.

The Bedouin connection runs deep

Sinai has been Bedouin territory for centuries, longer than the resort strip has been here, longer than the airport, longer than the dive industry. The families we work with on the Sharm side have been guiding visitors into their desert for three generations. The food at the camp is cooked by Bedouin women using recipes that haven't changed, and the music at the night sessions is live, not a speaker playing a Spotify mix.

Getting to the pickup point

All tours include A/C van pickup from every major Sharm hotel area: Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Nabq Bay, Ras Um El Sid and Hadaba. Pickup times are confirmed by WhatsApp after you book. Evening tours usually leave hotels around 3 to 4 PM, depending on season and sunset time.

Common questions about Sharm El Sheikh.

About riding in Sharm El Sheikh

  • Is the Sharm desert really better for stargazing than the Hurghada desert?

Yes, noticeably. The Sharm desert sits at slightly higher altitude, the surrounding terrain blocks more light pollution from the resort strip, and the air is drier. On a moonless night our Sharm camp routinely shows the Milky Way band naked-eye with no effort.

  • How much does a Sharm El Sheikh safari cost?

Sharm tours start from EUR 25 per adult for the Super Safari (Sinai quad + camel + Bedouin dinner) and EUR 30 for the Stargazing Safari with a working telescope session. Kids 6 to 11 pay roughly half, under-5s go free. Full prices are shown on each tour page.

  • What should I wear for a Sharm desert safari?

Closed shoes, light long sleeves and long trousers, and a warmer layer for after sunset, since the Sinai night cools off faster than Hurghada. We hand out head scarves for the dust. Bring sunglasses and a small torch for the Bedouin camp.

  • Is a Sinai desert safari safe?

Yes. Every Sharm tour runs within authorized desert zones, stays with a lead and sweep guide, and uses vehicles that get mechanical checks before every pickup. We only work with long-established Bedouin families who have been guiding guests in these canyons for three generations.

  • Do I need to stay in Sharm to book a Sharm tour?

Yes. Pickup is from Sharm hotels only (Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Nabq, Ras Um El Sid, Hadaba). If you're staying in Hurghada, book a Hurghada tour instead, the desert experience is excellent there too and the logistics are simpler.

  • Can I do a Sharm tour as a day trip from another city?

In theory yes, but we don't recommend it. The ferry from Hurghada is unreliable and inter-city road transport is long. If you only have access to Sharm for a day, WhatsApp us and we'll advise based on your specific timing.

  • What's the best time of year for a Sharm safari?

September to May is prime. The desert cools nicely after 4 PM, sunsets are long and golden, and the night sky is at its darkest November through February. June to August still runs, but only early morning or sunset slots, midday heat in the canyons is severe.

  • What is included in a Sharm safari price?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, a short riding lesson for quad tours, the desert session itself, a stop at the Bedouin camp for tea and a full dinner, and English-speaking guides throughout. Stargazing tours also include a telescope-led session with constellation pointing.

  • Can kids join a Sharm desert safari?

Yes. Camel rides and Bedouin dinner tours accept all ages. Quads carry a passenger age 6 and up behind a guide, and solo riders must be 16 or older. Families with small kids usually book the Bedouin dinner plus camel combo which has no age limit.

  • Can I cancel a Sharm booking if my plans change?

Yes, free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Most Sharm bookings are Pay on arrival so there is nothing to refund if you cancel in time. For online-paid bookings we refund to your card within 3 business days.
